Minnesota youth invited to weekend of free fishing

On Jan. 17, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced Minnesotans may fish free statewide Jan. 17-19 when accompanied by a child 15 years old or younger.
To boost family participation, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is promoting the weekend with online tips and a webinar and waiving vehicle permit fees at all 73 state parks and recreation areas on Jan. 19.
Before heading out, the DNR says wear a foam life jacket or float coat, carry ice picks, rope, an ice chisel and tape measure, and check ice thickness frequently, doubling guidelines for white ice.
Winter Free Fishing Weekend gives families, friends and newcomers an opportunity to try fishing, and families can combine fishing with birding, winter hiking, nature photography and campfires at state parks and recreation areas.
Trout season in lakes outside the Boundary Waters opens Jan. 17, and Benji Kohn said, `If you've ever considered it, this is a great winter to give ice fishing a try.
