Gregory Tomso, selected for his collaborative leadership, will start Jan. 1, 2026, aiming to reverse a 38% enrollment decline at St. Cloud State, officials said.
- Next year, Minnesota State named Gregory Tomso as St. Cloud State University's next president, with a Jan. 1, 2026 start and board approval in St. Paul.
- A national search led by Greenwood Asher & Associates found 99 applicants, 14 Zoom interviews, and four finalists recommended by a search advisory committee including Matt Cecil, Lisa Foss and Rodney Hanley, chaired by Dr. Kenneth Janz.
- Currently on sabbatical through August 2026, Tomso has worked at the University of West Florida since 2004 and increased enrollment 17% while raising retention to 89%, Olson said.
- Tomso's record positions him to address SCSU's enrollment decline of about 6,000 students, or 38%, amid a recent 6.5% tuition increase and stabilization at around 10,000 students.
- Interim President Larry Dietz announced he would leave early due to family health issues, prompting a national search as Dietz, campus and community leaders attended the trustees meeting where Tomso pledged investment and praised Minnesota hospitality alongside Dr. Connor Cronin.
