Minneapolis Restaurant That Offered Free Meals in Protest of ICE Raids to Close by Year’s End
Owner Dylan Alverson said the cafe has exhausted every option after serving more than 30,000 free meals and taking in 2,000 donations.
Modern Times Cafe, a South Minneapolis staple, will close by year-end after nearly 16 years in business. Owner Dylan Alverson called it an "incredibly difficult decision" driven by financial and community pressures.
Following deaths of George Floyd, Ren, and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, Alverson operated a menu-free restaurant for six months supporting the community. The temporary closure and reopening later accrued nearly $70,000 in debt.
During six months of free meals, the restaurant served over 30,000 meals with over 2,000 donations. Nearly 85 percent of clientele consisted of people experiencing homelessness or limited food access.
Alverson plans to spend the next two plus months celebrating Modern Times' legacy. He stated: "I want to cook for people and provide positive memories and experiences until it's over."
Over the coming week, Alverson will explain what led to the closure. He asserted: "The only way for places like Modern Times to exist in the future is to actively challenge the reasons why it can no longer exist.
