New gas-fired power station at Peterhead is approved
Developers say the 900MW plant will use carbon capture and provide backup power, while campaigners warn it locks Scotland into more fossil fuel use.
The Scottish Government approved the Peterhead Carbon Capture Power Station, granting consent to developers SSE Thermal and Equinor for the 900-megawatt facility in Aberdeenshire.
Developers SSE Thermal and Equinor insist the plant provides "flexible and efficient gas-fired generation" to support a renewables-led system, offering "reliable backup power" while "complementing renewable energy."
Caroline Rance, head of campaigns at Friends of the Earth Scotland, called the decision a "catastrophic failure" that traps households in 30 years of reliance on volatile fossil gas.
Katherine May of Oxfam Scotland blasted the approval as a "startling act of climate hypocrisy," noting it occurred as the Scottish Parliament debated Scotland's role as a global climate leader.
North East Scotland Green MSP Maggie Chapman claimed "carbon capture is little more than cynical greenwash," arguing ministers should invest in renewable energy rather than expand Scotland's "largest source of climate pollution.
