Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa enacted a law setting 18 as the minimum age for marriage. Until now, young people could marry from the age of 16, provided that they had parental authorization.

Until now, the minimum age for marriage was 16 years, however, parental authorization is required if young people are between 16 and 18 years old. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa enacted this Monday the decree of the Assembly of the Republic that amends this law.

The minimum age for a young person to marry in Portugal has increased to 18 years, now that the President of the Republic has promulgated the decree of the Assembly of the Republic that prohibits the marriage of minors.
