Deadly Philippines Quake Turns Seabed Into Shore
Search and rescue operations continue as officials verify casualties, with 30 people still missing and 1,399 injured across quake-hit regions.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported 10 additional deaths yesterday, bringing total fatalities from last week's magnitude 7.8 Mindanao earthquake to 78, with at least 30 people still missing.
Driven by a shifting of the nearby Cotabato Trench, the June 8 earthquake caused "coastal uplift," where tectonic forces thrust chunks of the shoreline upwards, leaving stretches of coast unrecognizable to longtime residents.
More than 1.50 million individuals are affected, with the earthquake damaging 774 structures and more than 74,000 houses, of which 13,700 were totally destroyed across the region.
The Philippine Red Cross deployed 264 staff and volunteers to support operations, while displaced families in 47 evacuation centers received more than P184.9 million in assistance.
Following arrests of two women posing as Department of Public Works and Highways officials, Philippine National Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered units to intensify operations against scammers in affected areas.
