Millions on benefits urged to act as DWP seeks fresh evidence from claimants
The government is seeking more claimant evidence after receiving 38,000 responses, as workshops and a toolkit aim to widen public input.
On Monday, the Department for Work and Pensions urged all 4 million Personal Independence Payment claimants to complete a 'vital' form to inform the Timms Review of the UK's most claimed disability benefit.
Disability Minister Sir Stephen Timms launched the Review to examine whether PIP remains suitable for modern claimants, aiming to ensure it is 'truly fair and fit for the future.'
To gather lived experiences, organisations can use a 'Workshop in a Box' toolkit, with Co-chair Sharon Brennan emphasizing the need to reach marginalised communities whose voices are often missing from official consultations.
Fazilet Hadi, head of policy at Disability Rights UK, criticized a separate DWP pilot as 'absolutely astonishing,' warning that shifting assessment roles to case managers is a 'recipe for disaster.'
Evidence gathered will shape an interim report expected in the coming months, as Government plans include supporting more disabled people into work while balancing welfare spending concerns.
