North West Province Faces Foot and Mouth Disease Outbreak: Authorities Respond
SOUTH AFRICA, JUN 16 – Over 900,000 animals will be vaccinated across affected provinces as the government responds to outbreaks of highly contagious SAT 2 and SAT 3 foot-and-mouth disease strains.
- The North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development confirmed an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the JB Marks Local Municipality of the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District.
- Approximately 2% of the cattle herd at Karan Beef's Heidelberg facility is currently infected, according to a marketing manager.
- A R72 million shipment of foot-and-mouth disease vaccines is expected to arrive in South Africa by mid-June, as stated by the Department of Agriculture.
- Both farms linked to the outbreak have been quarantined to prevent animal movement, and testing of farms related to the Gauteng outbreak is ongoing.
