Mike Trout will likely turn down invitation to participate in All-Star Home Run Derby
Trout said a strained right hamstring is steering him away from the derby, though he expects to be ready for the All-Star Game.
Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout said Friday he is unlikely to participate in the All-Star Home Run Derby in Philadelphia because of a strained right hamstring.
The 11-time All-Star had considered participating because festivities occur in Citizens Bank Park, about 45 miles from his hometown of Millville, New Jersey.
Placed on the 10-day injured list on June 18, the three-time American League MVP was hitting.234 with 17 homers and 36 RBIs in 74 games when sidelined.
Trout has declined previous Derby invitations, fearing maximum-effort swings would disrupt his hitting. He told reporters Friday, "It would have been cool to do it, but the injury kind of threw things off."
Despite missing the Derby, Trout expects to play in the All-Star Game on July 14, ranking second in American League outfield voting behind Aaron Judge. "Progress is going great," he told reporters Friday.
