Party in Spain’s Government Questions Co-Hosting 2030 World Cup with Morocco After Migration Crisis
Sumar says 2,000 migrants remain in Ceuta and wants Spain’s sports institutions to revisit the plan, citing Morocco’s response to the crisis.
- On Wednesday, Sumar presented a non-binding motion in Parliament asking Spain to reconsider co-hosting the 2030 World Cup with Morocco following the migration crisis in Ceuta.
- Last week, 72,000 people surged into the Spanish enclave, with more than 80 deaths reported during the crossing on Thursday and Friday at a breakwater and border fence.
- Sumar lawmaker Nahuel Gonz accused Morocco of using migration for political pressure, telling broadcaster TVE, "The Moroccan state does not respect human rights, it uses migrants to exercise political pressure."
- Although Sumar holds ministerial positions in Socialist Prime Minister Pedro's government, the party controls only 26 of 350 parliamentary seats, making passage unlikely despite hopes for backing from other left-wing parties.
- The 2030 World Cup will be co-hosted by Spain, Morocco, Portugal, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, with South American hosts marking Uruguay's centenary of the first World Cup in 1930; some 2,000 people, including one thousand minors, remain in Ceuta.
