A Former New York Prison Guard Is Found Guilty of Manslaughter in an Inmate’s Fatal Beating
Jonah Levi was also convicted of gang assault and conspiracy after jurors said he helped beat and cover up the death of Messiah Nantwi, 22.
On Wednesday, a jury in Utica, New York, convicted former corrections officer Jonah Levi of manslaughter, gang assault, and conspiracy in the death of inmate Messiah Nantwi at Mid-State Correctional Facility.
Nantwi died from massive head trauma after being struck dozens of times by guards using fists, boots, and batons during a wildcat strike involving National Guard members.
Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick told jurors Levi "stomped on" the inmate's head, while defense attorney Lewis G. Spicer argued his client did not use fatal force.
"This verdict sets an important precedent," Patterson Nantwi, Messiah's father, said in a written statement, while District Attorney Fitzpatrick thanked jurors for their diligence.
Caleb Blair, a former guard, is scheduled for trial on May 4, while another guard faces trial June 1, following the facility's scrutiny after Robert Brooks's death.
