Microsoft to Give DARPA Hands-on Access to Quantum System at New Maryland Site
DARPA will test Microsoft’s Majorana 2 system on-site as the company moves its quantum hardware toward commercial use by 2029.
- On Tuesday, Microsoft opened the Microsoft Quantum Research Center in the Maryland Discovery District, granting the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency direct access to a new quantum system using the Majorana chip for independent testing.
- The Capital of Quantum initiative, a public-private partnership launched in January 2025, prompted this facility. State officials secured more than $500 million in pledged investments toward a $1 billion goal to accelerate quantum research.
- Event attendees witnessed "chandeliers" performing quantum computations, cooled by multiple layers of cylinders to-273 Celsius, or nearly-460 Fahrenheit, according to principal quantum hardware theorist Edward Chen.
- Since Microsoft's initial announcement, three leading quantum companies—IQM, Quantum Motion, and Riverlane—established facilities in the Discovery District. Moore said quantum focus provides pathways to boost economic growth and job opportunities.
- DARPA is evaluating Microsoft's quantum approach to determine if it can yield economically feasible systems by 2033, while the company plans to have commercial quantum systems ready by 2029.
