Massive UK Study Finds High-Mileage Electric Cars More Durable than Petrol
Researchers found EVs have similar early failure rates but last longer than petrol cars at higher mileage, with a 7.5% gap by 120,000 miles.

- Researchers found that among cars aged three to eight with 90,000 to 120,000 miles, 16.5 per cent of EVs failed compared to 22.1 per cent of petrol models, making electric cars around 25 per cent less likely to fail.
- EVs recorded 4.7 suspension defects per 100 tests between 60,000 and 90,000 miles, outperforming the 6.1 rate for petrol cars, though electric models recorded around 1.8 times as many tyre defects.
- British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association chief executive Toby Poston said, "A well-maintained, higher-mileage electric car can be an extremely durable used vehicle," noting mileage alone should not deter buyers.
- Although MOT tests do not track battery health, research shows EV batteries generally retain 90% of capacity after 90,000 miles, indicating long-term durability despite lingering concerns about the technology.
