Microsoft Confirms Emergency Update For Millions Of Outlook Users

Microsoft issued emergency updates to fix Outlook crashes related to PST files stored on cloud services after January 2026 Patch Tuesday caused widespread application freezes.

  • On Saturday, Microsoft released emergency out-of-band updates for Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server to fix Microsoft Outlook failures with PSTs stored in cloud-backed storage, including prior January fixes.
  • After installing updates released on or after January 13, 2026, some apps became unresponsive when opening or saving files in cloud-backed storage like OneDrive and Dropbox, Microsoft says.
  • In some configurations, Outlook may hang and require termination or restart; affected users reported missing Sent Items and re-downloaded messages disrupting offline access with Microsoft Outlook PST files stored on OneDrive.
  • Administrators should install the cumulative out-of-band update via Windows Update or the Microsoft Download Catalog, but if systems are unaffected, there is no need to update and they can wait for the preview update or next month's Patch Tuesday.
  • This is the second out-of-band update since January's security patch, following a January 17, 2026 emission that fixed remote desktop and hibernation issues.
