Micheál Martin: Irish PM to Discuss Middle East Conflict with Pope Leo
Martin said the pope supports peace efforts and discussed redress for clerical abuse survivors, as Ireland prepares to lead the European Union Council.
On Friday, Taoiseach Micheál Martin arrived at the Vatican for a private audience with Pope Leo XIV, accompanied by his wife, Mary, and greeted by Prefect of the Papal Household Petar Rajic in the San Damaso Courtyard.
Ahead of Ireland assuming the European Union Council presidency on July 1, Martin intends to discuss reconciliation and peace, exploring how leaders can collectively address conflicts in the Middle East, Ukraine, and Sudan.
The meeting offers an opportunity to reflect on Ireland's relationship with the Catholic Church, including "the deep pain and trauma" of survivors of clerical abuse, according to the Taoiseach.
Following the Vatican audience, Martin will visit the Pontifical Irish College in Rome to view its archives and announce government funding to support cataloguing and preservation of these records.
Later on Friday, Martin will meet Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to strengthen ties between Ireland and Italy, covering trade, tourism, culture, and preparations for the upcoming EU budget agreement.
