Mexico and US will start talks March 16 on reviewing their free trade agreement
Bilateral talks begin to address rules of origin, supply chain security, and regional production to ensure USMCA benefits primarily accrue to member countries, officials said.
- On March 16, negotiators from the United States and Mexico will begin bilateral talks as part of a joint review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement later this year.
- Amid tariff pressure, the discussions are meant to ensure the agreement's gains remain with the parties, as Jamieson Greer and Marcelo Ebrard instructed negotiators to strengthen rules of origin and North American supply-chain security.
- Some products remain excluded from USMCA protections, leaving a 50% tariff on steel, aluminum and copper, a 17% tariff on Mexican tomatoes, and a 25% tariff on medium- and heavy-duty trucks, while negotiators will meet regularly.
- Mexican officials including Marcelo Ebrard have been traveling to Washington to offset tariff threats, and Canada's Dominic LeBlanc will meet Jamieson Greer on Friday, officials said.
- Greer said U.S. and Canadian officials plan to meet in the coming weeks over the pact, while Mexico and Canada are separately discussing deeper cooperation on trade and security before the USMCA review.
