Mexican Naval Vessel that Struck Brooklyn Bridge Towed Across East River for Repairs
- The Mexican Navy sail training vessel Cuauhtémoc struck the Brooklyn Bridge in New York Harbor on May 17, 2025, injuring 19 cadets and killing two.
- The incident occurred less than five minutes after the ship departed Pier 17 during a goodwill training cruise bound for Iceland, and its exact cause remains unknown.
- All three of the ship’s 158-foot masts hit the bridge’s 135-foot clearance, snapping the masts, while no one on the bridge was injured and traffic has since reopened.
- The Cuauhtémoc, carrying 277 people aboard, is now moored at Pier 36 with a 50-yard Coast Guard safety zone established; the ship will be towed to the Brooklyn Navy Yard on May 23 between 6:30 a.m. And 8 a.m.
- The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating all mechanical and human factors, including the propulsion system, while the Mexican embassy arranges to reunite injured cadets with families and the training cruise is terminated.
