Met Police told to re-examine whether Father Ted co-creator faced discrimination due to gender-critical stance
The watchdog found the Met’s complaint handling inadequate and said Linehan can seek another review if he remains dissatisfied.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct ordered the Metropolitan Police to reinvestigate a discrimination claim filed by Graham Linehan, finding the force's initial handling was "not reasonable and proportionate."
Linehan, 58, was detained at Heathrow Airport in September 2025 after flying from Arizona on suspicion of inciting violence; he later received an apology and a £25,000 settlement from the Met following a civil claim.
In May 2026, Linehan submitted an application containing "an allegation that he was discriminated against due to his gender-critical beliefs," while the watchdog criticized the force for failing to explain arrest grounds or investigate bail conditions.
Scotland Yard must now re-examine the discrimination claim and other failings identified by the watchdog, with Linehan entitled to "a further right of review to the IOPC should he be dissatisfied with the outcome."
High-Profile figures including author JK Rowling and Conservative politicians previously criticized Linehan's arrest, and this reinvestigation represents a significant development in the ongoing dispute with London police over his treatment.
