Metro Purple Line subway extension between Koreatown, Beverly Hills opens May 8

The 3.92-mile underground extension adds three stations, cutting travel from Union Station to Beverly Hills to 21 minutes, enhancing transit ahead of the 2028 Olympics.

  • On Thursday, Feb. 26, Metro announced Section 1 of the D Line extension will open on May 8, bringing three new underground stations at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega.
  • Years in the making, the D Line subway extension broke ground more than a decade ago and faced delays due to extended testing and final construction requirements.
  • The 3.92-mile addition runs underground through Hancock Park, Windsor Square, the Fairfax District and Carthay Circle, with Metro contractors using tunnel-boring machines that excavated 40 to 60 feet per day and stations featuring artwork and escalators accessing the Wilshire/Fairfax station platforms.
  • Metro officials say Phase 1 will cut travel time from Union Station to Beverly Hills to about 21 minutes, linking riders to LACMA, La Brea Tar Pits, Petersen Automotive Museum and The Grove.
  • The second phase is tentatively set to open in spring 2027, and the third in fall 2027, completing a 9.1-mile extension with seven stations toward Westwood and UCLA at nearly $10 billion, Metro said.
