Meta launches AI gadget Charm as race for post-smartphone hardware heats up
Meta said the device is still in late development and has only a few units built, with a holiday launch planned.
On Wednesday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled Muse Charm, a pocket-sized keychain device that delivers the full Muse AI experience, during the company's annual Connect conference.
Muse reached the App Store's number one spot within days of launch, accumulating nearly 600,000 downloads in five days and establishing itself as the centerpiece of Meta's AI strategy.
The device features a roughly 5-cm OLED touchscreen with a customizable Muse avatar and includes a built-in 5G modem, allowing users to tap a fingerprint sensor to access the AI without unlocking a phone.
Privacy concerns emerged after reports indicated Muse accessed notification previews without explicit authorization; Meta issued patches and clarified that data syncing requires user opt-in permission.
Meta's hardware strategy now spans $1,299 VR glasses launching spring 2027, $349 camera-free Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses arriving October 13, and the Muse Charm shipping by December.
With its new virtual everyday helper, Muse, the Tech Group comes up with a surprise success and presents a specially designed device. However, the AI agent raises some questions.
