Meta cutting several hundred jobs across Reality Labs, Facebook and other departments

Meta is cutting roughly 700 jobs globally to shift resources toward AI investments while continuing to restructure Reality Labs and other divisions, affecting fewer than 1% of its 79,000 workforce.

  • On Wednesday, Meta Platforms began laying off several hundred employees across Reality Labs, Facebook, sales, and recruiting teams. The cuts affect staff globally as the company redirects resources toward artificial intelligence.
  • Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is prioritizing aggressive artificial intelligence investment, with projected 2026 capital expenditures reaching $135 billion. This strategic pivot drives workforce streamlining to fund massive infrastructure commitments.
  • Since Zuckerberg declared 2023 the 'year of efficiency,' the company has never fully stopped cutting. Meta eliminated more than 21,000 roles between 2022 and 2023; Reality Labs cut approximately 1,500 positions this past January.
  • CTO Andrew Bosworth is taking over the internal 'AI for Work' initiative to increase adoption of artificial intelligence tools. A Meta spokesperson stated the company regularly adjusts teams to achieve goals and offers affected employees other opportunities.
  • Meta's restructuring coincides with broader tech industry trends where AI adoption is increasingly cited in workforce decisions. Globally, more than 45,000 tech jobs were eliminated in the first quarter of 2026, with AI cited in one in five cases.
