Met Office Warns of 'High Temperature Spikes' and Heatwaves This Summer
The forecaster expects above-average temperatures, with an increased chance of heatwaves and thunderstorms after the warmest spring on record.
On June 1, the Met Office released its three-month summer forecast, predicting "an increased chance of heatwaves and heat-related impacts" with above-average temperatures expected throughout June, July, and August.
This outlook follows the warmest spring on record for England and Wales, where temperatures reached 35.1C at Kew Gardens in London during late May, establishing a new May temperature record.
Weather experts at MeteoGroup expect "significant bursts" of heat, while the World Meteorological Organization warned of an 80% probability that a warming El Niño climate event will develop this summer.
Early June brings unsettled weather to the UK as Atlantic frontal systems arrive with rain, though forecasters anticipate higher pressure and more settled conditions will emerge later this month.
Climate trends indicate hotter-than-average summers are now twice as likely compared to the 1991-2020 reference period, reflecting rising UK temperatures consistent with global climate change.
