Merlier wins stage seven as Pogacar remains in yellow
On Friday, Belgian Tim Merlier won stage 7 of the Tour de France in Bordeaux, with the Soudal-Quick Step rider timing his sprint to perfection against a headwind.
Breakaway riders Jakob Otruba and Baptiste Veistroffer led with a maximum advantage of one minute 38 seconds before being caught with 20km to go as sprinter teams controlled the peloton.
Poel hit the front with around 600 metres to go but started his sprint too early, while Merlier waited until 150 metres to go to surge past Biniam Girmay and Fernando Gaviria.
Merlier's victory marks his fourth career Tour de France stage win, demonstrating his ability to navigate contested sprint finishes with precise timing and team support.
Around 40 riders contested the final kilometres after the peloton relaxed at the three-kilometre mark, with Netcompany Ineos and other sprinter teams orchestrating the approach into Bordeaux.
Tim Merlier (33) has broken the deadlock in this edition of the Tour de France. The Soudal-Quick Step sprinter won the anticipated mass sprint in Bordeaux by a bike length. He dedicated his victory to Bertrand De Keyzer (84), to whom he partly owes his career. Unfortunately, Bertrand did not live to see it.
The Belgian sprinter of Soudal-Quick Step won quite easily after a massive sprint Like Olav Kooij on Wednesday in Pau, Tim Merlier needed no one to win a massive sprint
