Mercedes up for Formula One returning to V8 engines in 2030, says Wolff
On Sunday, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem announced Formula One aims to reintroduce high-revving V8 engines by 2030, ending the current hybrid V6 era and prioritizing cost, weight, and fan engagement.
The sport most recently used V8 engines from 2006 to 2013 before switching to complex 1.6-liter V6 turbocharged hybrid units; critics argue these expensive engines have alienated fans by altering on-track action.
Officials propose a new V8 design featuring sustainable fuels and "very, very minor electrification," with motorsport director Toto Wolff suggesting it could combine 600kW from combustion with 300kW of electric energy.
Mercedes-AMG motorsport director Wolff confirmed the team is "absolutely up for it," provided discussions remain structured and respect financial realities for Original Equipment Manufacturers.
Implementation requires approval from four of six power unit manufacturers by 2030, though Ben Sulayem stated the FIA will unilaterally force the transition for 2031 if manufacturers fail to reach consensus.
