Mental fitness test for suspect in killing of B.C. RCMP Const. Shaelyn Yang
The trial of Jongwon Ham, charged with first-degree murder of RCMP officer Shaelyn Yang, is paused for a court-ordered mental fitness evaluation.
- On Wednesday, a judge ordered a mental fitness assessment for Jongwon Ham, accused, who appeared in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver, The Canadian Press reported.
- During an eviction at Broadview Park, Const. Shaelyn Yang was stabbed to death while trying to speak to the man sheltering in a tent as a City of Burnaby employee issued an eviction notice.
- Jongwon Ham appeared in B.C. Supreme Court wearing a grey suit and black-rimmed glasses; pallbearers in red serge carried Shaelyn Yang's casket at a Richmond, B.C., Nov. 2, 2022 regimental funeral.
- Ham's judge-alone trial, scheduled for Monday, was adjourned pending the outcome of the fitness assessment.
- RCMP said Yang served as a mental health and homeless outreach officer who joined about three years ago, and the Office of the Chief Civilian Director said in December 2022 it found no grounds to believe an officer committed an offence.
