AMATRICE. In the central Italian community of Amatrice, a vigil and 239 strokes of bells commemorated the severe earthquake which killed nearly 300 people in the region exactly ten years ago.
Today marks the 10th anniversary of the deadly magnitude 6.0 earthquake in the Amatrice area, which almost completely destroyed the town north of Rome and killed more than 300 people in the wider area, 236 of them in the city. People gathered in the city at 3:36 a.m. local time, with a silent torchlight procession and 236 strikes from the bell tower, one for each victim in the city.
