Venue Bins One Nation Fundraiser over Safety Concerns
The party said the fundraiser was moved after protest groups vowed to gather, while police said the venue made the cancellation decision.
On Friday, a One Nation fundraiser featuring leader Pauline Hanson and MP Barnaby Joyce was cancelled by Giorgio Casa in Moonee Ponds after anti-racism protesters vowed to demonstrate outside the venue.
Groups such as the Victorian Socialists and Free Palestine Melbourne organized to gather 45 minutes before the event to "drive Hanson out," part of a broader week of protests against the party across Australian cities.
Police confirmed the venue made the cancellation decision, while One Nation told the ABC the relocation was due to security advice from Victoria Police and Australian Federal Police.
Moonee Valley City Mayor Rose Iser welcomed the cancellation, stating the party's platform is unwelcome in the suburb, while protest organizers confirmed their demonstration would proceed regardless.
Melbourne has a history of protesting against One Nation, dating to its 1997 launch at Dandenong Town Hall, as the party claims its recent fundraising campaign has raised over $3 million from nearly 50,000 donors.
