There appears to be an increase in the number of humpback salmon in the Trondheimsfjord. If catches continue as they have been for the past two weeks, this could be a record summer for the unwanted species.
Humpback salmon have been present in Norwegian rivers for decades, but in recent years we have seen a huge increase in the humpback population that spawns in odd-numbered years. Now the unwanted humpback salmon are once again appearing in Norwegian rivers. The government is well prepared for this summer's humpback influx and is funding stocking measures in over 60 rivers.
We are once again in the midst of a humpback salmon year, and the unwanted fish have already appeared in several places in the county. But a public initiative to get rid of them will not pay off in Nordland.
