EchoStar to Spend $5 Billion on New Satellite Constellation

MONTREAL, CANADA, AUG 1 – EchoStar's $1.3 billion contract with MDA Space will produce over 100 5G low Earth orbit satellites enabling global direct-to-device services by 2029, supporting U.S. leadership in space connectivity.

  • On Friday, EchoStar named Canadian satellite developer MDA Space Ltd. as the prime contractor for a US$1.3 billion deal to produce over 100 satellites.
  • Last year, EchoStar mentioned plans for satellite-to-phone services, and despite an FCC probe, it is developing its own system to compete with Starlink, which launched last week through T-Mobile.
  • According to EchoStar, the constellation enables global talk, text and broadband services to standard 5G devices, with satellites designed, manufactured, and tested at MDA’s Montreal facility for delivery in 2028 and service in 2029.
  • Market reaction saw MDA Space Ltd. shares rise 18.4% and EchoStar’s stock fall 17.4% on Friday.
  • With additional options, the contract could grow to US$2.5 billion for over 200 satellites, marking MDA Space’s fourth LEO contract in just over three years.
