Louisiana Rapper Mystikal Sentenced to 20 Years in 2022 Rape Case
Master P said the case underscores the need for better mental health care in the Black community after Mystikal received a 20-year sentence.
On June 16, rapper Mystikal, born Michael Lawrence Tyler, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for a 2022 rape in his Prairieville, Louisiana, home. He pleaded guilty to third-degree rape after originally facing a potential life sentence.
The victim testified that Tyler punched, choked, and forcibly raped her after accusing her of stealing money. Tyler previously served six years for a 2003 sexual battery conviction and must continue sex offender registration.
On the We In Miami Podcast, Master P, founder of No Limit Records, argued that drug use and untreated struggles often spiral out of control within the Black community. He suggested Mystikal never received necessary mental health support.
Stating 'Drugs is killing our culture,' Master P emphasized that seeking professional counseling is often frowned upon in the Black community. He called for better access to doctors, noting Mystikal's Gulf War military service may have contributed to his challenges.
Following the sentencing, Mystikal's son, Jimi Nu, spoke out about the emotional toll on the family. Supporters and family members continue navigating the aftermath of the rapper's long-term incarceration while acknowledging the severity of the charges.
