Massive fire becomes Norway’s largest in modern times after destroying more than 100 homes
Officials said the blaze was the largest residential fire in modern Norwegian history, and investigators have not yet determined the cause.
On Friday, a fast-moving wildfire destroyed more than 100 homes near the city of Drammen, Norway, forcing the emergency evacuation of hundreds of residents from the dense residential neighborhood.
Thomas Evjen told Reuters that recent heat fueled rapid spread, saying "It says something about the heat we've had lately. So once the fire started, it spread quickly."
More than 60 firefighters and water-bombing helicopters currently battle the inferno around 30 miles west of Oslo, with no casualties or missing persons reported so far.
Local police said the fire was "still not under control," while thick black smoke continues to cover the area as crews work to contain the advancing flames.
Authorities have not yet determined the fire's cause, while dozens of families remain displaced as rescue officials assess extensive property losses and monitor treacherous shifting conditions.
