JWST’s Mysterious Little Red Dots May Be Black Holes Growing at Incredible Speeds

- Astronomers have struggled for years to explain how supermassive black holes existed less than 600 million years after the Big Bang, a puzzle deepened when the James Webb Space Telescope revealed a population of these red-tinted objects in 2023.
- Using Japan's ATERUI III supercomputer at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, researchers simulated the early universe and found intense far-ultraviolet radiation prevents normal star formation, forcing gas clouds to collapse into supermassive stars that become black hole seeds.
- Simulations show that "Overmassive black holes and little red dots naturally form in simulations," Chon said, with gas-rich environments enabling these black holes to consume material dozens of times faster than modern black holes can.
- Roberto Maiolino of the University of Cambridge favors a "black hole star" theory, noting this "explanation would account for the dots' massive lights," though debate remains within the scientific community about the true nature of these objects.
