‘Empathetic’ Chilean 13-Year-Old IDed as Second Victim Killed in Biscayne Bay Boat Crash
BISCAYNE BAY NEAR MIAMI, FLORIDA, JUL 31 – Two girls aged 7 and 13 died when a barge hit their sailboat during a children's sailing camp, with two others critically injured, officials said.
- On Monday morning around 11:10 a.m., a sailboat with five children and a 19-year-old counselor aboard was collided with by a barge near Hibiscus Island in Biscayne Bay.
- The children were participating in their last week of a Miami Yacht Club sailing camp for ages 7 to 15, and officials believed all five children wore life jackets.
- Two girls died in the crash: Mila Yankelevich, 7, granddaughter of Argentine producers Gustavo Yankelevich and Cris Morena, and Erin Victoria Ko Han, 13, a Chilean student who moved to the U.S. in 2024.
- Ko Han was remembered by her Chilean school as an empathetic, well-rounded student who excelled in academics, especially mathematics, and participated in volleyball and aerial trapeze activities.
- Two girls, who are 8 and 11 years old, continued to be in critical condition at Ryder Trauma Center, while the U.S. Coast Guard investigates the incident amid more than 550 recreational boating fatalities across the country last year.

MIAMI — The two girls who died after a barge slammed into sailboat carrying five children and a camp counselor in Miami Beach accidentally drowned, the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office said Thursday.
Ari Buchman, the daughter of Argentines, was hospitalized in intensive care since Monday, after being attacked by a barge in Biscayne Bay. Another victim of Argentine nationality is still hospitalized with serious injuries.
