Mariners’ Colt Emerson makes 1st first career start at shortstop as J.P. Crawford gets day off
On Tuesday, 20-year-old Colt Emerson makes his first MLB start at shortstop for the Seattle Mariners against the Chicago White Sox, less than 24 hours after hitting a three-run homer for his first big league hit.
The 20-year-old was promoted from Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday after All-Star utilityman Brendan Donovan suffered a left groin muscle strain and landed on the 10-day injured list.
Emerson averaged 5.5 pitches per appearance in his first seven plate trips without striking out, impressing teammate Woo, who noted, "Everybody's already obviously seen just the raw talent."
Manager Dan Wilson praised Emerson's maturity and approach, stating, "He's come up here, he's been very mature and his approach has been outstanding," while Crawford received a day off for a right-handed heavy lineup.
General Manager Justin Hollander estimates Donovan will be sidelined two to three weeks, providing Emerson multiple opportunities to establish himself at his natural shortstop position.
