Trump Says US Won't Comply with UN's Proposed Carbon Tax
The United States rejects the UN’s maritime carbon tax proposal under the Net-Zero Framework citing sovereignty risks; the tax could generate $10-$12 billion annually, estimates say.
- On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States firmly opposed a United Nations carbon tax and urged nations to defend their sovereignty.
- This week, the controversial Net-Zero Framework was set for a final vote at the United Nations' International Maritime Organization , prompting U.S. opposition.
- Under the Net-Zero Framework, large ocean-going ships must phase out traditional fuels or pay charges of $100 to $380 per metric ton, funding low-emission ships and transition initiatives.
- The U.S. State Department last week said it would consider port fees, commercial restrictions and sanctions on supporters, while Rubio warned the tax would raise energy, food and fuel costs globally.
- The IMO could raise $10-$12 billion annually, and if approved the framework would take effect in 2027 across the IMO's 176 member states to fund just transition initiatives.
