State Police Has Received Approval Of 24 Houses of Assembly, Met Constitutional Threshold — Gbajabiamila

The reform would establish a dual policing system and return to the National Assembly after 24 state assemblies approved it, officials said.

  • On Friday, the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill announced that 24 state Houses of Assembly have approved the Constitution Bill, 2026, meeting the required two-thirds threshold of the 36 states.
  • This constitutional amendment provides the legal framework for a dual policing system designed to tackle the nation's rising insecurity, according to Chairman of the group and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.
  • While 24 states have consented, 12 states are still being awaited to give their nods, with some currently scheduling plenary or undergoing committee review at their State Houses of Assembly.
  • With the threshold met, the amendment can now proceed to the National Assembly for transmission to President Bola Tinubu for his formal assent, in compliance with Section 9 of the Constitution.
  • The Working Group stated that draft bills are currently undergoing legislative drafting review at the Federal Ministry of Justice and are expected to be returned for final consideration on or before October 30, 2026.
