Dad who killed school shooter in Oregon is haunted by those he couldn’t save, he says in interview
Authorities say the father and military veteran prevented more deaths after the gunman killed three students and a teacher at the school.
On October 15, 2026, a 16-year-old shooter forced his way into Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, where Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old military veteran, fatally shot the gunman to prevent further casualties.
Giamanco, whose children attend the school, spotted a 'man in black' firing at a pickup truck and a woman before calling 911 and deciding to intervene, telling the dispatcher, 'I'm sorry, I have to go in.'
Inside a classroom, Giamanco saw a teacher struggling with the shooter and fired his weapon, stating, 'I shot him two more times to make sure that he couldn't move.'
The gunman killed three students and a teacher before Giamanco stopped him; Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz praised the courage of both Giamanco and the teacher who grappled with the shooter.
Breaking his silence on Friday, Giamanco expressed remorse, saying, 'I want to apologize for not saving their babies,' though President Donald Trump called him a 'great hero.
