Manu, Suruchi miss out on LA Olympics quota, win team silver
Both Indian shooters missed the podium as China swept the medals and the available 2028 Olympic quotas in the women’s 10m air pistol final.
- On Thursday, shooter Jaypal Malviya won silver in the men's 10m air pistol event at the ISSF World Championships in Doha, securing India's first quota place for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
- Malviya, a 31-year-old farmer from Madhya Pradesh, achieved this breakthrough in only his second international competition using a second-hand Walther pistol purchased in 2021 for Rs 1,05,000.
- In the eight-man final, Malviya scored 242.2 to finish behind gold medalist Kai Hu of China, who recorded 243.9, while Jindrich Dubovy of Czechia claimed bronze with 220.9.
- Double Olympic-medallist Manu Bhaker and Suruchi Inder Singh finished fifth and sixth in the women's 10m air pistol final, missing individual quota places for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
- Although the women's team secured a silver medal, Olympic quotas are allocated to National Olympic Committees rather than individual athletes, so India will continue pursuing additional berths as the World Championships progress.
