Manitoba Plans First-Of-Its-Kind Ban On Youth Social Media, AI Chatbots
Premier Wab Kinew says the proposed law would make Manitoba the first province to restrict youth access to social media and AI chatbots.
On Saturday, Premier Wab Kinew announced that Manitoba will ban youth from using social media and AI chatbots, making Manitoba the first province in Canada to formally advance such legislation.
Kinew stated that platforms are intentionally designed to get people "addicted to the infinite scroll," amplifying comparisons to artificial standards and exposing children to content they are not ready for.
The plan mirrors Australian law requiring companies to prevent users under 16 from accessing accounts; companies failing to oblige face penalties of up to $48.8 million Cdn.
Lawmakers in Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Saskatchewan are also considering similar ideas, while Federal Liberal members recently passed a non-binding resolution supporting age restrictions on social media and AI chatbots.
Globally, France is advancing legislation for youth under 15 while the European Union prepares its own age verification tools, reflecting a broader international movement to regulate online platforms for children.
