Held Captive, 21 Nagas Released in Manipur’s Restive Ukhrul District
The 21 Tangkhul Nagas were released after being held captive amid ethnic clashes involving road blockades, arson, and deployment of security forces in Manipur.
- On Wednesday , Kuki groups intercepted 21 Tangkhul Naga individuals on the Imphal–Ukhrul Road at Shangkai village and handed them to Army personnel late that night, who escorted them safely to Ukhrul.
- Retaliation after an anti-poppy drive on Wednesday sparked the clashes after two Kuki cultivators went missing and a gunfight erupted at Mapithel hill range between around 6.30 am and 9 am.
- Officials reported that 18 of the 21 were Tangkhul Nagas and three came from other communities, with residents stopping three vehicles carrying 21 passengers as negotiations sought the release and rescue of six stranded people.
- Following the recovery of two bodies in Kamjong, Kuki protestors blocked the Ukhrul–Imphal road and the case was handed to the NIA, authorities said.
- Security forces including paramilitary units and the Army have been deployed to Thowai Kuki and Shangkai, about 5 km from Litan Sareikhong, where internet curbs remain as tensions continue.
