Man who quit delivery job after £5.2 million lottery win returns to former workplace
He returned with flowers, lucky dip tickets and a hamper to thank former colleagues after 30 years delivering parcels at Lakeside.
Gary MacDonald, a 61-year-old former deliveryman, returned recently to Lakeside Shopping Centre in Thurrock, Essex, to surprise his old colleagues with gifts after spending more than 30 years delivering parcels there.
After scooping £5.2 million on the National Lottery last year, MacDonald quit his delivery job, married his long-term partner Anita, and moved to a new four-bedroom detached home in Essex.
Donna Samuels, manager of the Babyeze shop at Lakeside, called the visit an "incredible surprise," saying she was "so touched" by the gesture and that Gary's habit of sharing joy is "typical of him."
MacDonald expressed pride in his previous work, stating he "built connections" with people through daily interactions while fulfilling a promise to return and share his good fortune with former colleagues.
Reflecting on his journey from starring in a Lotto TV ad to married life, MacDonald described the last 12 months as "crazy," joking that his wife Anita has used the opportunity for a "little bit of a shopping spree.
