Man who murdered girlfriend in hot tub in Shetland is jailed for life

Aren Pearson was sentenced to life with a minimum of 25 years after stabbing his girlfriend over 40 times in a controlling and violent relationship, police said.

  • Following a High Court in Edinburgh trial, Aren Pearson, 41, was found guilty Wednesday of murdering 24-year-old Claire Leveque at his mother's home in Sandness.
  • Evidence presented at trial showed a controlling and violent relationship where Pearson sought to degrade and abuse Claire Leveque, with earlier incidents including Pearson saying 'You deserved every bit of it and more.'
  • During a recorded 999 call Pearson said, `Hello, hi, my name is Aren Pearson. I've just killed my girlfriend in the hot tub in the garage` and later admitted stabbing Ms Leveque at least 26 times; Pearson's mother, Hazel Pearson, placed the initial 999 call.
  • Judge Paul Arthurson ruled Pearson must serve a minimum of 25 years before parole eligibility, with sentencing scheduled in the coming months.
  • Authorities said Shetland Women's Aid urged support and noted crimes like this are extremely rare in Shetland, following Pearson's actions at Melby Pier and his arrest.
