Man who lost half his face after being hit by drunk driver gets new 3D-printed one
- On July 21, 2021, Dave Richards, 75, cyclist from Budleigh Salterton, Devon, became the first NHS patient to receive a 3D printed facial prosthesis at The Bristol 3D Medical Centre, Frenchay, Bristol, which mimics his hair, eye, and skin colour.
- Dave was cycling with two friends when a speeding drunk driver struck them near Mere, off the A303 on July 21, 2021; the driver was on his phone and tried to swerve around them.
- Surgeons carried out a free flap reconstruction and subsequent operations to release scar tissue and fit prosthetics after Richards suffered full-thickness burns and lost an eye.
- He began indoor cycling five months after the accident, and Dave added: `As you can imagine I am not best pleased with his reduced sentence as I very nearly lost my life and have to live with all the pain from my injuries on a daily basis`.
- The Bristol 3D Medical Centre in Frenchay integrates scanning, design and printing, using skin-safe resins and bone-like materials to create natural prosthetics and monitor patient progress.
