Reno Man Arrested in San Francisco for Kitten Torture and Killing, Police Say
Police said William Ohlson fled onto a hotel roof before officers arrested him on suspicion of animal abuse and resisting arrest.
On Tuesday, July 14, the San Francisco Police Department arrested William Ohlson, 33, a Reno resident, after he allegedly tortured and killed a 6-week-old kitten in a Market Street ATM vestibule on July 1.
San Francisco Animal Care and Control launched an investigation after identifying Ohlson entering the 1844 Market Street ATM vestibule, where he "proceeded to violently torture the animal to death" before fleeing with the dead kitten.
Following a search warrant at The Oak Hotel on Fell Street, police deployed a drone to track Ohlson onto the roof; San Francisco Fire Department crews then assisted the San Francisco Police Department in safely apprehending him.
District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said a state Supreme Court ruling forced officials to release Ohlson ahead of his Monday arraignment, as the decision limits pre-trial detention to cases involving violence against humans.
Police Chief Derrick Lew noted this may be the department's first use of surveillance drones in an animal cruelty investigation, while the case remains open as authorities pursue legal avenues to restrict Ohlson's future animal possession.
