Man Saves Dog From Burning Semi After Enduring Violent Wreck on I-64 in West Virginia
The humane association is caring for Hennessy while her family in Iowa plans to travel and bring her home, officials said.
On Tuesday, a fiery crash on Interstate 64 in South Charleston killed tractor-trailer driver Jeffrey Simons, 63, but his dog, Hennessy, survived and is set to reunite with her Iowa family.
After police brought Hennessy to the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, staff used KCHA Facebook and more than 100,000 followers to identify the Animal Rescue League in Marshalltown as her original shelter.
A FaceTime call with her family helped Hennessy find comfort, which the Animal Rescue League of Marshalltown said "seemed to lift her spirits tremendously" and "made a world of difference."
Hennessy's family plans to travel from Iowa to West Virginia by the end of the week to bring her home, with the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association working to facilitate the reunion.
The community helped track Hennessy's adoption history through the shelter's social media reach, prompting the rescue to write, "We're hoping we can make a miracle happen for her, too.
