Man given 13-month prison sentence for stealing Banksy painting
- Larry Fraser, 48, of Beckton, east London, was sentenced at Kingston Crown Court on Friday to 13 months for stealing Banksy's Girl With Balloon.
- Fraser told the court his motive was a historic drug debt and he acted under a degree of pressure and fear, admitting he did not know the target or print value until the offence day.
- On September 8, CCTV shows Fraser waiting about 10 minutes before smashing the Grove Gallery's glass door and loading the print into a van; Fraser was arrested at his Beckton address on 10 September and police recovered the artwork after a warrant on September 12.
- The print was returned to the gallery undamaged and valued at 270,000; James Love was later acquitted following a trial.
- Judge Anne Brown characterised the burglary as brazen and serious, saying the offence was "simply too serious" for a suspended sentence, while Detective Chief Inspector Scott Mather praised the Metropolitan Police's Flying Squad for recovering the print within four days.
