Man Dies in Australia’s Second Fatal Shark Attack of 2026
The man’s friends pulled him from the water and performed CPR as emergency crews responded, police said.
On Saturday, May 16, 2026, a 38-year-old man died after a great white shark attacked him while spearfishing at Horseshoe Reef off Rottnest Island in Western Australia.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development confirmed the predator was a 4-meter great white, marking Western Australia's first fatal shark attack since March 2025.
Friends retrieved the victim from the water and performed CPR while transporting him by boat to Geordie Bay jetty, where paramedics and police were unable to revive him.
Western Australia Police Sergeant Michael Wear confirmed a coroner's report is underway, while DPIRD urged the public to take "additional caution" in the island's waters.
Australia's second fatal shark attack in 2026, the incident follows a January fatality in Sydney Harbour, prompting authorities to deploy patrol vessels to monitor the area.
