Man dies after being stabbed outside mosque

An 18-year-old was fatally stabbed outside Oldbury Jamia Mosque during Ramadan; two others injured with non-life-threatening wounds, police say motive unknown and investigation ongoing.

  • On Friday, a murder investigation began after Zeshan Afzal, 18, was stabbed to death shortly before 9pm outside Oldbury Jamia Mosque, Oldbury Road, Smethwick.
  • Police noted that disorder erupted during Ramadan while the mosque congregation attended Taraweeh prayers, and West Midlands Police say there is nothing to suggest the attack was religiously or racially aggravated at this stage.
  • Police said they are reviewing CCTV and forensics teams are working at the scene, urging witnesses to contact West Midlands Police on 101 quoting log number 4896 of February 20 or use the Public Portal and Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
  • Two men were hurt during the disturbance and two other men, aged 19 and 22, were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries; the mosque's car park remained sealed on Saturday February 21.
  • To reassure residents, officers will have extra patrols over the coming days and called on anyone with information to come forward, supporting the victim's family and the local community in Smethwick.
