Man charged with manslaughter after dog-bite death in Wakefield
Police say witnesses came forward as investigators continue to examine the fatal dog attack and the circumstances behind the manslaughter charge.
On Tuesday, 55-year-old farrier Lee Ellis appeared at Bradford Magistrates' Court charged with manslaughter and owning a dog dangerously out of control following the fatal attack on James Judge, 55, in Wakefield.
Saturday's fatal incident occurred on an old trainline footpath off Blacker Lane, Calder Grove, where Judge was bitten by a German Shepherd before dying in hospital shortly after 7pm.
Solicitor Rob Fones stated there was "a verbal altercation in regards to right of way" and confirmed Ellis "will be taking the matter to trial" to contest the charges.
District Judge Mark Daley granted Ellis bail with conditions requiring him to reside at his Blacker Lane address and transferred the case to Leeds Crown Court for September 16.
Det Chief Insp Michael Cox confirmed two witnesses who stopped to assist have provided accounts, with the investigation continuing "at pace" while specially trained officers support the victim's family.
