Three dead and girl critical after family get into difficulty in sea off Shoreham
Police said the family entered the water for a swim before getting into difficulty, and an extensive search found no one else in the sea.
On Tuesday, August 18, 2026, a man, woman, and teenage girl died after getting into difficulty in the water near Shoreham Fort, Sussex Police confirmed; a younger girl from the same family remains in critical condition.
Chief Superintendent James Collis stated that emergency services, including His Majesty's Coastguard and the RNLI, responded to reports of four people in difficulty shortly before 3:00 p.m., as the family entered the water from the land to swim.
Multiple ambulances, two air ambulances, and rescue teams from Littlehampton, Shoreham, and Newhaven attended the scene at Shoreham-by-Sea, while the A259 Brighton Road was blocked in both directions near Kingston Lane.
Sussex Police are investigating the incident under Operation North and have appealed for any information or video footage, confirming that their search of the water is complete and they are not looking for anyone else.
Collis noted the incident will have a "profound effect on the community"; specialist officers are supporting the family's next of kin, and the police force will provide further updates as soon as they are able.
